Have you been researching the Austin family tree ? If so, I would like a swatch. I was in Belgium a couple of years ago and a couple of Austins, ?James n Phillip were noted on the
Menin Gate which commemorates the fallen in 1st world war and I believe they were my grans brothers.

Thanks for the update about Frank.He was a really nice man.We all loved to go to the van cos he always had a cheery thing to say to us kids.I remember a woman working in the van but I thought she was his wife but I am thnking now that maybe she wasn't. I hope life was kind to him,

alec was not only a great player but also a great character. i went to school with his daughters and a few years later when one of them was getting married and moving to the isle of eigg i drove a van load of stuff for the ceremony and some furniture etc. to mallaig with alec and another friend, joe deeley to accompany me. after working all day friday delivering to restuarants, schools, etc. we loaded up on the friday night and drove overnight, hitting every kind of weather (and maybe a few deer, rabbits and others) on the way. We eventually arrived at 7 a.m. saturday, unloaded onto a fishing boat, had a cuppa then set off again. by this time i was on autopilot and if it hadnt been for alec spinning so many jokes and telling stories of "the old days" i`m sure i would have drifted into the land of nod and we would all have had an early shower in a loch. incidentally my own mother (a keen celtic fan) recently spent a week or two in the same home as alec and was delighted at that. i`m sure st peter won`t fall asleep while writing up his big book as alec will have his sides splitting with his jokes and stories.

Boxing day I miss a lot. It does not really happen in the rest of europe and some go to work, walk the dog but no big dinner, no chocs and not the tele for a bog film before falling asleep.

Banjo what an amazing co-incidence right enough.My dad is buried in New Dalnottar so I will look for ***** grave next time I am up which will probably not be this week but more likely next week. I hope his name is on the cross.Infact I hope the cross is still there after all these years.I will let you know if I find it. I wonder why his mum did not want a gravestone? Maybe was hard for her to accept the death of her child at such a young age.
